Full tank empty bank!
When I bought my 98 Camaro Z/28, twenty bucks filled the tank, even using premium fuel, but now twenty bucks gets me a quarter of a tank. Everyone feels this same burden. The gas stations aren't the only place America is hurting because of higher gas prices; everyday items like groceries and supplies cost more too. But what are our politicians, our supposed representatives, doing about this? They are going on vacation, and we are stuck paying higher prices for just about everything. The average Joe is really hurting right now. I can't remember the last time I actually FILLED up the tank in my Camaro. So, what is the common sense solution- drill! We have millions and millions and maybe even billion of barrels of oil and natural gas that is just sitting there, kind of like our politicians. Just doing nothing. Yes, technology is great but it is expensive. I am all for developing new technology but I still have to be able to afford it, or I just can't buy it. Not everybody has a new IPhone, some of us just have to live with our old Motorolas. Hybids are nice but many times their extra costs prevents the average person from buying them. I can't afford a new hybid but my Camaro still needs gas, premium that is, for me to get to work so I can get a paycheck. We have to drill. It will help the economy, provide jobs, protect our security, and help pay the way to make those new technologies affordable. So, to those Presidental candidates if you really want to help the people you claim to represent and serve, drill. Drill now. Drill often. Drill where ever there is oil. Oh by way, if we don't others will. Just look at China trying to drill off our coast. Greenies should ask themselve who has a better environmental record, the US or China. Its not China by the way. That's just common sense!

I have to agree with the fact that gas prices are amazingly over priced and as a full time student with a part time job it's hard for me to save any of the money I bring in because it normally goes into the gas tank. Drilling in certain spots is def. needed especially if foreign competition is coming to do the same job. The technology that I am looking for is something that can be put into a car, for a low price, that will enable the car to be able to use ethanol based gas that is over 10% ethanol based. I believe that the future of gas is in the corn fields. And I will kiss the person who invents a car that runs off of water.
dadecb1- the key to your statement is low prices. New technology is expensive, however gas is cheap. Right now to help the average joe or below average joe we need to use the resources we have available. We have lots of oil just sitting there waiting for someone to come get it. Oh by the way, we could get really cheap ethanol right now, but it is not from corn. We could get it from Brazil which makes sugarcane-based ethanol. Only problem, our wonderful Congress has placed a very high tariff on the Brazilian ethanol so it does not compete with the corn based variety. Again, another example of our politicians representing an special interest group, farmers, above THE PEOPLE of the United States. That doesn't make much common sense does it?
Good points. Although I do not agree with the future being corn. Proof is not there. Thanks for the invite. I'll keep checking in.
My momma said that drilling for oil is like opening a box of chocolate, you have bite into a few before you get to the one you want.
anon- thanks for your words of wisdom. Let me guess your momma's last name was "Gump"?
Ed-Corn is definitely not the future. Using corn for ethanol only drives up the price for our food staples like beef, chicken, pork, and milk. Plus, corn ethanol is not a true substitute. In economics as the price of a good goes up consumers look for a substitute, a product that is cheaper. Corn ethanol is more expensive than gas,so consumers in a mass market aren't going to pay for this product. Congress continues to pay corn ethanol producers to keep making it even though consumers don't want it. They are just storing up somewhere. There are some other types of ethanol that look good; Brazil currently produces sugar based ethanol, Congress only need lift the tariff and Americans would have access to it, and research is being done on cellulose ethanol. The last one can be made out of trash. It is a scene right out of Back to the Future. Now that makes common sense- take our trash and make fuel out of it.
I totally agree with aaron Todd Williams on his opinion. However, how would you propose getting around the enviornmentalists who would disagree with you and fight you on your opinion? Would you provide any benefits for them? They arent just going to give up and let you do your drilling wherever you please. And which candidate do you believe has the countries best interest at heart? I heard John Mcain speaking the other day about drilling and I totally agree with him especially with the war going on and also the fact that oil is a non renewable resource. Senator Barack Obama made fun of Mcain on that issue but i believe Obama is just showing his true personality and I do not believe he has the capacity nor the respect to run this country, especially in these times where the U.S. needs to look strong. The United States is the number one country in the world for gas consumption. And because this is true, I believe drilling will benefit us as a American citizens and also in the future. Many countries do not like the United States, which will only be detrimental in the future if there is a large scale war of some sort. So securing oil reserves that are U.S. property is a big plus to our security. I know there are some in Alaska but where else in the U.S are there oil reserves?
Differently, if you were president Mr. Williams, how would you deal with the immigration problems this country is faced with?
And shouldnt the United States leave the corn production up too small scale countries that can only produce those kinds of foods? Kind of similar to the colonies in the 1700's as there role was to provide raw materials and foods.
heeyyy coach willy!
Eric G- You asked a lot of good questions. I will leave the immigration for another time, I have a opinion on that, and it will make for a good blog. So, check back for that one.
As far as enviromentalists go, I believe we should be good stewards of this land. However, we can safely drill for oil. New technology has allowed this. The ocean by itself actually deposits more oil in it then we do by drilling. So, drilling is cleaner than the ocean itself. But, more importantly we should consider that people could use the extra money they would save from lower fuel costs. Some people barely get by and the higher the prices go the tighter things get financially for them. Again, many people can't afford all the new technology. I am more concerned about the average or below average (money wise) American then what a bunch of politicians and enviromentalists think. We need to drill because it will help these people.
You bring up another great point and that is national security. We are sending 100's of billions of dollars to countries who don't really like us. The API estimates we have over 60 years worth of oil and natural gas, and that is just with what they know. Our politicians have a responsiblity to protect us. Iran, Venezuela, and many Middle Eastern countries hate us. We buy oil from them and only allow them the money to buy the weapons that can then go and hurt our own people. Not smart.
Last point is which President. I think both have changed or are changing their positions on drilling for oil. Of course we need to research other energy sources but the market will decide what is truely viable. One of the candidate talks about helping the poor and middle class but yet won't do everything possible to help them. Right now, we need to built more nuclear facilities which would produce clean energy and decrease our dependence on oil. Right now, we can build more clean coal plants, again reducing our dependence on oil. The jury is out on wind and solar for obvious reasons: it is not always windy and sunny, and how do you adequetely harness that energy. So, the only other logical step we can take is drill more oil, whereever it is, and convert the oil shale. To recap, reduce our need by using much more nuclear and coal, and increase our domestic supply. Sounds like common sense right? Unfortunately, in Washington, D.C. common sense get left outside the district often. I mean here are men and women that want to take over the health care system when they already have broken the retirement system. Why would you want to give them something else, unconstitutional mind you, to mess up. Not me. I will blog a lot on these last few matters. Where is the common sense?
PS I am going to vote for the one who is going to allow more money in my pocket. It is not the governments they did not work for it, I did. If I have to pay higher energy costs because of some politicians do-goodery, I am not voting for him.

Drill. There's enough oil shale in Colorado to make three times as much as reserves in Saudi Arabia. America shouldn't rely on other countries, especially countries that wish harm. Also, some politicians scheme to use oil from the U.S National oil reserve when it's only for disasters should we ever run out of oil, temporarily lowering prices so they'll win votes.
hey mr. williams,
just checkiong out your blog and you have some pretty interesting things going on here, but i have a question for you. do you honestly think that our government is just sitting there doing nothing? You really think that they don't want to fix the problem? They have to drive cars too, I'm sure they want lower gas prices too. I believe that they are trying, but it's not doing MUCH. the other day the gas price had gone down a few cents. It's getting somewhere, just not very fast. Going to fill up your car...most people don't fill up their car full ways, but that's how it is, a lot of us don't have very good fuel effecient cars anyway. I think that the government is TRYING, and you mey be right, it may not be their best, but they're still trying, and it'll get there sooner or later.
Keep writing...it's interesting. :)
I agree, that the people of the USA, have the right to abolish the government if it becomes destructive. We are given a freedom, that everyone is equal, and that along withe the British we are deaf to the voice of justice, and we are.

p.s. i posted on both blogs 'cause i didn't know which one to do...my bad
I completely agree. The politicians are doing nothing about the gas prices that are making our lives so much harder! We need to drill because we have so much oil! Politicians are worried about the economy. Yet, they go on vacation with OUR tax money!
Drill now is great but here in the US the drilling isn't the problem it's the refineries that are not built and will take 20 years to build. We have on land and offshore already capable of producing; yes drill now because of legislation that has slowed down that production build refineries for the future. But what is the answer for now? How about capping the profit oil companies can make. each quarter they show huge profits they aren't going under. Where's the legislation contolling big business? Oh that's right big business controls the legislature

I don't agree with your opinion
When we do that it will make pollution. And when fuel didn't
come out that make really pollution. That is just labor.
And I think it need a lots of money. This is why I don't agree with your opinion.

I agree with your opinion. Nowadays, the prices of everythings are extremely high. So that, the poor like normal citizens get poorer because they have to buy stuffs for maintaing livehood but the money they get from their job is same. And, they really need low prices of things.
And, we need to drill the oil that is available if we can. The process of drilling oil will be cost a lot but when we get enough oil, the price of oil gets lower. It is our duty for having oil with the technology that we have.
The rich such as candidates have to help drilling the oil, invest their money like that.It means helping the people and it is for the people that can support them.
I don’t agree that Congress is just “on vacation,” that drilling is the only “common sense” solution, or that technology is too expensive to help. Congressmen should go home to hear from those they represent. Improving efficiency and conservation are always sensible. Finally, technology quickly drops in price, allowing progressively more people to afford it.

I couldnt vote on your poll because i have another answer of my own,
FIND OTHER ENERGY RECOURCES, I mean C'mon, there are other things besides oil.

While it is true the US hasn't built a new refinery in 20 years, it doesn't lack refining capacity. All the existing US refineries are continually expanded -- because it's more efficient than building brand new ones -- and there's more than enough capacity today.
I loved reading all of your comments. Make sure that when you post your comments you try to base what you say on fact not just what you believe. For instance, technology is very expensive. It is cheaper to keep a car you already own then to buy a new car that gets better gas mileage. Also, when buying a new car if you compare hybrids with their conventional counterpart they are far more expensive. It would take many years to offset the extra cost. Just an example of this can range from 5 yrs for the Civic/Civic Hybrid to 16 years for Chevy Tahoe/Tahoe Hybrid. Plus, sometimes new technology creates worse problems. Hybrids and electric cars have to have huge batteries to run them; how many people have thought about the enviromental impact of disposing those batteries when they are dead. Everything must be weighed out. I am here to say that consumers know what is best for them. For some it is to keep the car they have, for others to buy a conventional car because of the price, and for others they have the means to purchase the extra expense of new tech., like hybrids, hydrogen, and electric cars. The bottom line is that our government is keeping us from drilling the oil we know we have. The government has kept new refineries from coming on line because of government regulations. The government has kept nuclear facilities, which are clean and very efficient, from being built because of regulations. The energy situation needs to be attacked from many different angles. New tech is extremely important but the bottom line is we still need oil and we have it have it. We just have to drill for it. There is no need for people to suffer right now just because the government wants us to conserve more. Bureaucrats are destroying our great country. Everyone needs to use some common sense.
Of course the gov. knows we have the oil.
Thats not my point.
We schould conserve the oil we do have.
the prices of gas are going down because americans are finally conserving gas,
weve actually used less then the oil crisis in 1979.
Chevorlet is actually being sued for false advertising about their new hybrid suvs and trucks not having the actual gas miledge promised.
I agree we should drill, but there are things to consider. Like if we drill off the florida coast we will destroy many coral reefs which are already declining.
